Stair Tread Covers: Stair Retread or Replacing Stair Treads

A stair tread cover, also called a cap or retread, goes over an existing tread instead of replacing it. This guide compares covers with full replacement, explains the carpet-to-hard-floor change and what can usually be covered.

Going from carpet to hard flooring

Remove carpet, pad and tack strip, then inspect the treads underneath.

If treads are sound, the stair can often be finished with an overlap nosing over the tread or a full wall-to-wall tread made from the new flooring.

Damaged or uneven treads may need repair or replacement first.

Added thickness can change the first and last riser heights. Check your local code; requirements vary by jurisdiction.

What can be covered

Sound, solid treads that do not flex or squeak badly are typical candidates for covers.

Open sides, returns and landings need their own pieces and should be noted when you measure.

Tread Space makes approved LVP and wood parts by hand; laminate is limited to nosing only. Suitability is confirmed during project review.
