Floating treads for open-riser and cantilevered stairs

A floating tread is a wrapped box finished on every side that can be seen. On open-riser stairs the underside and both ends are exposed, so the number of finished sides drives the build.

Choose floating treads when

• Your stair has no risers, so the underside of each tread is visible.
• Treads cantilever from a wall or a central stringer and float clear of the structure.
• You are planning under-tread lighting and need the tread built with the reveal and routing for it.

What to measure

• How many sides are visible: 4-sided covers top, front and both ends; 5 and 6-sided add the underside and back.
• Finished tread length and depth, including any part passing a stringer or balustrade.
• The finished tread thickness you want, as well as your plank thickness.
• How the tread is mounted — cantilevered, on a central stringer, or supported at both ends.

• Treads can be built with routing and clearance for LED strips; the lighting itself is not supplied or installed.
