Stair Caps and Cap-Over Treads
A stair cap is a finish piece placed over an existing tread, typically covering its walking surface and front edge. It relies on the existing stair for support; it is not a replacement for a damaged structure.
What a stair cap covers
A cap-over tread adds a new surface and nose to a retained tread. A riser finish is a separate vertical piece; the phrase stair caps and risers does not mean they form one structural member.
A full replacement removes the old tread. Cap-over construction retains it and changes the finished thickness.
Vinyl stair caps and flooring-matched parts
Vinyl stair caps vary by product and installation system. Do not assume a click-lock room floor can be installed the same way on steps; follow the flooring and stair-part instructions.
Tread Space makes approved wood and LVP stair parts from the flooring identified for your project. Suitability is confirmed during project review; structural support and installation are handled by your builder or installer.
For laminate, Tread Space makes nosing only, not full caps, treads or risers.
Fit, edges and build-up
Caps require a sound existing tread and a planned fit at the wall, nose, open sides and landing. Loose or damaged supports need review before a finish is added.
Added thickness affects first and last riser heights and adjacent floor transitions. Measure the existing stair and the proposed finished assembly.
Check your local code; requirements vary by jurisdiction.
Common questions
What are stair caps?
Finish pieces placed over retained stair treads, usually covering the walking surface and front edge.
Are stair caps structural?
A cap-over finish relies on the existing stair support. It does not repair or replace a damaged structure.
Are caps the same as replacement treads?
No. Caps retain and cover the existing tread; replacement removes the old tread.
Can vinyl stair caps match my flooring?
Tread Space reviews approved LVP stair parts made from the flooring identified for the project. Suitability is confirmed during review.
Do caps change riser height?
Added thickness can change the first and last finished riser heights. Check your local code and review the complete assembly.
