Stair Tread Template: Why and How to Use One

Stairs are rarely perfectly square, and walls are rarely perfectly straight. A stair tread template records each tread's exact shape so new treads fit tight between walls. This guide explains when to use one and how to measure by hand.

Why stairs need a template

Each tread's width can differ by 1/8 in or more from front to back and from step to step.

Walls can lean or bow, and skirt boards may not be parallel.

Wall-to-wall treads have no trim to hide gaps, so the fit has to follow the actual opening.

How to use a stair tread template tool

Set the tool on the tread with each end against the wall or skirt board.

Adjust the ends to match the angle at each side, then lock the tool.

Transfer the shape to the tread or note the angles and lengths for that step.

Label every template by step number; never assume two steps are the same.

Measuring by hand instead

Measure each tread width wall to wall at the front and the back.

Measure tread depth from the riser face to the front edge and the riser height.

Note open sides, returns and landings, and photograph every step.

Common questions

What is a stair tread template?

A tool or pattern that records the exact shape of a tread opening so the new tread fits between the walls.

Do I need a stair tread template tool?

It helps most on wall-to-wall treads where walls are out of square. Careful hand measurements at the front and back of each step also work.

Can I measure stairs without a template?

Yes. Measure each tread's width at the front and back, its depth and the riser height, and photograph every step.

Are all my stair treads the same size?

Rarely. Widths often vary by 1/8 in or more, so measure and label every step.

What should I send with my measurements?

Send each step's measurements, notes on open sides and landings, photos and your flooring details with your quote request.
